QINGDAO, April 22 (ChinaMil) -- The 14th annual meeting of the Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS), sponsored by the Navy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLAN) for the first time, was held on April 22, 2014 in Qingdao, a beautiful coastal city in east China. More than 150 naval leaders and representatives from 21 member countries, 3 observer countries of the Symposium and Pakistan who apply to become observer of the Symposium, attended the meeting.

The meeting officially started at 08:30 on the morning of April 22, 2014. Wu Shengli, member of the Central Military Commission (CMC), commander of the PLAN and chairman of this annual meeting, delivered the opening speech. Ding Yiping, deputy commander of the PLA Navy presided over the symposium.

According to Wu, thanks to the joint efforts by all member and observer countries in recent years, the cooperation under the framework of WPNS is getting increasingly extensive, and the strategic mutual trust is growing stronger. Not only has the WPNS become an important mechanism and role model in terms of regional maritime security cooperation, but also has begun to play a more important role in worldwide marine affairs with its ever-increasing influence. As proved by the practice, cooperation leads to trust, and trust leads to a win-win situation. The annual meeting is expected to further enhance the mutual understanding and trust among the navies from various countries and reinforce the pragmatic cooperation on the sea.

During the two-day-long annual meeting, the member and observer countries will review the minutes of the annual meeting in 2012 and the minutes of the work shop in 2013 and 2014, introduce and confirm the future activity schedules, and launch research and discussion on the theme of “cooperation, trust and win-win situation”. Wu Shengli, commander of the PLAN, will make the keynote speech. Moreover, the search of the missing Malaysian plane MH370 is also a topic for discussion at this symposium.

Founded in 1987, the WPNS is the sole naval symposium in Western Pacific Region that starts multilateral dialogue and cooperation. After more than two decades of development, it now has increased its number of member countries from the initial 12 to 21, and has an influence beyond the territory of “West Pacific”.

Chinese Navy is playing an active role in promoting the development of the Symposium. Again, by focusing on the theme of “cooperation, trust and win-win situation”, the WPNS highlights China’s most sincere desire to strengthen the safety cooperation on the sea and maintain maritime security.
