BEIJING, April 21 (ChinaMil) -- In 1987, a delegation was dispatched by China to attend the 9th International Sea-power Symposium (ISS) in which it agreed to the proposal of launching a regional naval symposium.

In 1988, the first session of the West Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS) was held in Sidney, Australia. China was one of the founding countries of the WPNS.

Prior to 2000, China only dispatched the military attaches to attend the WPNS. Starting from 2000, the PLAN dispatched the officers of relevant military ranks to attend the working group meetings and annual meetings of the WPNS.

With enhancing comprehensive national power and naval strength, China has been playing a more and more significant role in the WPNS.

In January of 2014, the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLAN) hosted the working group meeting of the WPNS for the first time in Nanjing, east China’s Jiangsu province, and is set to hold the 14th annual meeting of the WPNS in Qingdao city, east China’s Shandong province in April, 2014.

The upcoming WPNS will be a landmark event and a new starting point in the history of PLAN’s participation in the multi-lateral maritime security cooperation.
